NASA World Wind is a 3D interactive globe that allows users to view satellite imagery, topographic maps, and other geographical data. The WorldWind data servers at NASA Ames Research Center were shut down on April 5, 2019. As a result, the management and development team at NASA Ames Research Center no longer actively participates in WorldWind development. NASA’s WorldWind project has been discontinued, according to the agency. Is Nasa Worldwind Still Supported? Credit: NASA The WW app provides bathymetry data, which allows users to see ocean features such as trenches and ridges in 3D, and many people using the application create their own data and make it available. The public domain data of the United States Geological Survey (USGS), Blue Marble, and Landsat can be freely modified, re-distributed, and used in web sites to create images and videos based on World Wind. The user can rotate the selected planet, tilt the view, and zoom in and out by rotating it. 3D models of the Earth and other planets are overlayed with satellite imagery, aerial photography, topographic maps, and publicly available GIS data. NASA created a virtual globe called World Wind for personal computers running Microsoft Windows and the open source community developed it. The project is funded by donations from individuals and organizations. The project is managed by a team of NASA developers and volunteers. The program is released under the GNU Lesser General Public License. The program is based on NASA World Wind Central, which was released as open-source software under the NASA Open Source Agreement on February 28, 2003. The project was later transferred to the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory. ![]() The project was initially developed by NASA’s Ames Research Center in collaboration with the intelligence community. NASA World Wind was released on November 18, 2004. The program is available for Microsoft Windows, Linux, and macOS. ![]() It allows users to zoom from the outermost reaches of the solar system inwards to their own neighborhood. NASA World Wind is a free, open-source three-dimensional interactive world viewer.
